520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This study was conducted at the University of Rizal System-Morong, Rizal during the academic year 2015-2016. Descriptive-qualitative type of researcher was used since the analysis and interpretation would not require quantification but rather decree based from identification of novel's potentials. Data of the study were gathered through the discussion of "Angelica's Daughters: A Dugtungan Novel" utilizing the lens of Critical Hermeneutics. Ideas from this trend were used such as dynamic (round) or static (flat) characterization (for character analysis), the time/historical period, socio-cultural aspects and place/location (for setting analysis). Moreover, the novel comprised vintage photographs that led to semiotic analysis. Also, Norman Norwood Holland's "Five Readers Reading" (for the implication of triangulation). The researchers employed triangulation to cross-examine their findings. The legs of the triangle include researchers' interpretation, responses from external readers, and selected essays and criticisms. The researchers' findings for the character analysis included roll of dynamic (round) and static (flat) characters. Protagonists in the novel namely Angelica, Tess and Dina were considered dynamic or round characters for they changed in terms of their physical, social and psychological aspects. Meanwhile, Lola Josefina was noted as flat or static character for the showed no apparent changes in the aforementioned aspects. In setting analysis, there were two (2) frontiers where and when the action happened. With regards to Angelica's time, it can be noted that it happened during the Spanish Colonial Period specifically in Cebu City. For Tess' setting, it happened during 21st century the story of her settled from United States of America (USA) to her way to Philippines specifically in Manila. Theme analysis constituted three (3) major thoughts particularly Power of Tradition, Loss of Innocence, and Temptation and Destruction. On semiotic analysis, some of the significance of the vintage photographs present on every chapter of the novel to the content that the researchers elaborated was validated by selected essays and criticisms and by the interpretation of the readers. The researchers were also able to generate social implications about lives of the early Filipinos demonstrated upon reading the novel. In terms of language, there were three different languages used by the authors and uttered by the characters. The first language was the English and American Language. The Filipino Language was also presented on the novel. In lined with Education, it can be generated that the system of education during the Spanish period comprised gender-exclusive schools while the government system was an oppressive one for it subjugated those who stand against them. Through the use of triangulation, the researchers were able to verify certain claims. The researchers recommended that other variety of Hermeneutics can be applied in the novel and to use other lens or theory on Cecilia Mangguera Brainard's other novels. On order to enrich the discussion, it was recommended that bigger number of readers should be exploited.
