EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The study aimed to determine the challenges and adjustments of students in traditionally gender-dominated courses in the province of Rizal during school year 2018-2019. The respondents were the third and fourth year students ranging 19-21 years old from the selected universities and colleges in the province of Rizal, specifically Tomas Claudio Colleges, University of Rizal System Morong, Binangonan and Cardona campuses. The respondents were composed of 200 students taking up courses like Engineering, Industrial Technology, Electronics, Fisheries, Education, Accountancy and Psychology. They were chosen using the purposive sampling technique. To determine the profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, course and monthly family income, percentage and rank distribution were used. To determine the challenges and adjustments of students in traditionally gender-dominated courses with respect to the factors such as decision making, skills and performance, expectations and treatment, stereotyping, stress and related concern, weighted mean was utilized. To determine the significant relationship on the challenges and adjustments of students in traditionally gender-dominated courses with respect to the factors in terms of their profile, One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was applied. It was found out from the profile of the respondents that most students in traditionally gender-dominated courses are female who are 19 to 21 years old and has a monthly family income of 11,000 and above. With regards to different aspects, students experienced challenges when it comes to skills and performance, stress and related concerns and they are very much adjusted in the aspects of decision making, stress and related concerns. While there no significant difference on the challenges and adjustment of students in traditionally gender-dominated courses with respect to decision making, skills and performance, stereotyping, expectations and treatment. Yet there is significant difference with respect to stress and related concern. Based from the findings and conclusions, the researchers recommended the following: The learning institution may provide appropriate programs for the parents, schools and teachers regarding the vocational interests, needs and concerns of the students and to recognize their strengths and weaknesses. Career guidance or career counseling may be conducted for the students to help and guide them cope up with regards to the challenges they may encounter. Promotion of gender equality among men and women should be strengthened by providing intervention programs on the gender issues encountered. |
