The Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) Production and Processing which was done in 500 square meter area were undertaken as a requirement in Occupational Internship Program (OIP) for Bachelor in Agricultural Technology. This was conducted to give the student the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills learned in the classroom instruction as well as providing an income and self-employment. The investment requirements of the projects were shouldered by the student's guardian with an agreement of returning it after the implementation with 14% interest on capital annually. Roselle Production which was operated for a period of 195 days (6.5 months) was started on August 10, 2019 and terminated on February 22, 2020. A total land area of 500 square meters was used. The project was conducted at University of Rizal System Tanay Campus. The seeds were purchased at Kaber Farm Philippines located at Pulong Bunga, 4118 Silang, Cavite at seven hundred pesos (Php700.00) for 1,400 pcs of seeds. A total of 405 kilograms of roselle flowers was harvested. The 321 kilograms of fresh flowers were sold in whole sale basis at Php80.00 per kilogram. The remaining 84 kilograms of Roselle flowers was processed into jam. The capital investment in roselle production amounted to Php9,949.41 and the total sales of Php32,400.00 was realized. The net income was Php22,450.59 with a ROI of 225.65% percent. Roselle Jam processing which was managed for 110 days started on November 4, 2019 and terminated on February 22, 2020. A total of 250 bottles (280g) of roselle jam were sold in retail at Php80.00. The capital investment in roselle jam processing was Php13,813.45 and the total sales amounted to Php20,000.00. The net income was Php6,186.55 with an ROI of 44.79% percent. The problems encountered that greatly affected the projects were the insufficient water supply in the area, inclement weather condition, damaged leaves due to ashfall during the Taal volcano eruption, and difficulty in the harvesting of the flowers due to hair-like spikes. In jam processing the problem was the removal of seeds from the calyxes while preparing for processing. Based on the problems met, the author recommended that there should be at least two big water containers or drums in the area, proper timing of planting to avoid bad weather condition and wearing proper gloves for harvesting the flowers. In processing, use proper tools for the removal of seeds from the calyxes and wearing of rubberized gloves while separating the seeds from the calyxes. |
