| Summary, etc. | The study was conducted to have an inventory of the different weed species found in the University of Rizal System, Tanay Campus Pomelo production area. Classification of weed species, its density and habitat were determined. Actual field observation was done to identify the exact location of sample specimens. All gathered weed species were identified and validated by experts. Secondary data with reference was used to assess its classification. To measure the abundance in the area, plant density distribution was used. There are 38 weed species found in three sampling quadrats. The identified weeds belonged to 18 different families. Most of the gathered species are under family Poaceae and from class Magnoliopsida (dicot), twenty seven (27) are perennial weed species. Seventeen (17) out of 38 weed species were thriving in both sloping and flat area. Morphological characteristics were also classified, the researchers found out that there are twenty eight (28) broadleaved weeds in total that were dominated the area. Growth habit of weed species are also determined in the study, there were twenty four (24) erect weed species, mostly of the gathered species are growing with one stem that clearly above the ground. Barbed grass is the most dominant species found in the area, with an average density of 3.518. Ecological characteristics in terms of habitat were determined through actual field observation and literature review from reliable sources. Out of 38 collected samples, 37 species were found in terrestrial habitat and only one 1 as epiphyte. The researchers recommend that further studies may be conducted to determine the economic significance of the identified weed species considering their potential as pasture crops, in erosion control and others. Continues research in other areas in the University of Rizal System may be done to establish information on diversity of weed species. |
