Summary, etc EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This study aimed to determine the optimum viable design of a 3-stage compound spur gear train for energy conversion system of RPG that will yield the maximum power output that will transmitted to the flywheel and generator under predefined set of design for both geometric and economic constraints. This study utilized developmental method of research through optimization approaches. An optimization software and a Hybrid Algorithm (HA) which is the combined process of Genetic and Grid Search Algorithm were used to simulate and to find the optimum design variables such as gear teeth module, number of teeth of gear, and number of teeth of pinion for stage i that will provide the design of 3-stage compound spur gear train for RPG. Computer Aided Design (CAD) software was used to illustrate the new design model. It was found that the optimum design based on the simulated results of design variables and with an average of 54.88% improvement over the previous design in terms of power output and efficiency. The simulated results that yielded the maximum power output was satisfied and passed all the predefined set of constraints such as design, geometric, and economic constraints. The design cost were decreased by 44.7% compared to the previous design. Based on the summary and findings, the optimum viable design of a 3-stage compound spur gear train that yielded the maximum power output can now be used in energy conversion system of RPG. Through this optimum design, it can help to have a higher generated electricity than the previous design, it can convert to a large design scale for future use by using the power output model built. For further study, the researchers recommend to expand the ranges of design variables considered in this study to convert it on a large design scale and find the optimum design on that scale. Also, make an experimental study through constructing a prototype to prove the effectiveness of the model.
