520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
Summary, etc | EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The vehicle Mounted 4-Bladed Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine for Battery Charging was developed to serve as an alternative source of energy by concerting the wind's kinetic energy into electrical power. The researchers believe that maximizing the use of renewable sources will be answer to electrical power shortage that is now being experienced. The developed device was composed of turbine blades, pulley driven system, installed 12V DC Generator, and frame and casing made from locally available materials. Developmental, Descriptive and Experimental Methods of Research was used by the researchers' utilized instruments that were focused on the mechanical components of the HAWT considering its blades such as anemometer, speedometer, tape measure, multi-tester, tachometer and weighing scale. After the device was completed, it was tested several times. The summary of results showed that the average power output of the device could produce while running in its turbine mode was 76.52 watts, and the overall efficiency of the device (power coefficient) was 26.62%. And also, more than one fourth of the wind power generated can be utilized. The device's level of acceptability in terms of its usefulness, safety and maintenance, and functionality was perceived as Extremely Accepted after evaluation through questionnaire checklist by tricycle driver and operator respondents and expert engineers. Based on the summary of the design results, the researchers concluded that the developed Vehicle mounted 4-bladed Horizontal Axis wind turbine can charge only 6V and 9V automotive battery, this is because the voltage reading while running sometimes equals to or lower than 12V; the overall efficiency of the wind turbine will depend on the wind power converted, the more efficient is the turbine; and the developed device mounted on the roof of a vehicle (tricycle) responded purposively as tested, and can also be used on other vehicles such as jeepneys cars, owner type jeep, etc. as long as the speed requirement needed is obtain. The researchers came up with the following recommendation: tricycle drivers and operators may consider using the device: the future researchers mat consider to add charging system for an automotive battery to the developed device, modify the mechanical system (Pulley Driven System) by changing sizes of shafting, pulleys and belt used, and use other generator and test whether the device can produce more power and can generate higher voltage; and the future researchers may conduct further improvement in the design by using other types of blades, test and compare the results. |
