Dissertation note: Thesis Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English University of Rizal System-Morong. 2018 Summary: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This study aimed to analyze the factors affecting the reading comprehension of the selected Grade 10 students in Vicente Madrigal National High School. It was conducted at the University of Rizal System Morong, Rizal during the academic year 2017-2018. The researchers wanted to find out if there is a significant relationship between the reading performance of the respondents and the factors which are personal factors, family factors, social factors, school-related factors and the sub-factors of each. The study used the descriptive-survey type of research using three adopted reading tests and researcher-made questionnaire-checklist as instruments in gathering data to know how much the respondents understand what they read and the factors affecting it. The data were interpreted using the appropriate statistical treatment. Mean was used to determine the reading comprehension of the respondents and the extent of the factors affecting their reading comprehension. Pearson correlation was used to determine the significant relationship between the reading tests and the reading comprehension of the students with respect to the factors and the sub-factors. From the analysis of data, findings were summarized; on the reading comprehension with respect to reading test scores, the respondents got a very satisfactory result; in the extent of the factors affecting the reading comprehension of the respondents, personal factors, family factors, social factors and school-related factors are believed to affect their reading comprehension; the researchers also found out that there is a significant relationship between the reading tests and the factors affecting the reading comprehension of the Grade 10 students of Vicente Madrigal National High School with respect to personal factors specifically, mental/ cognitive state, family factors specifically materials available and social factors specifically peers while there is no significant relationship between the reading tests and the factors affecting the reading comprehension of the Grade 10 students of Vicente Madrigal National High School with respect to school-related factors. Therefore, it was concluded that all of the said factors affect the reading comprehension of the students and the reading scores of the respondents are significantly related with the personal factors specifically, mental/ cognitive state, family factors specifically materials available and social factors specifically peers. However, the reading scores have no significance with school-related factors. In view of the findings, it is recommended that students must develop their passion on reading to enrich their mental cognition by adding new information to their schema. In addition, parents must expose the students with reading materials at home at their early age. They must act as partners of the academe in ensuring that students enhance their language skills, mathematical skills and the like. Moreover, teachers must engage the students with motivating and interesting activities when teaching reading. They must also remediate those non-performing students based on sound research recommendations and studies. It is also suggested that Barangay officials must organize programs that promote reading activities every summer. Lastly, DepEd must ensure that every child is mentally and physically ready to go to school.
