EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The emotional status and emotional engagement of students during a class are associated with their level of performance. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the third year science teacher students' facial expression with the use of FACS (Facial Action Coding System) in relation to their performance in the exams and to know if facial expressions are an indicator of the level of performance. The researchers presented lecture videos on unifying themes in Biology with contents that align to the NCBTS (National Competency-Based Teacher Standards) to the respondents while the researchers are recording a footage of the respondents' faces and then gave them an exam after every lecture video. The researchers then analyzed and coded the recorded footage of the respondents' faces into respective AUs (Action Units) and the corresponding facial expression together with tabulating their scores. The study showed that the lecture videos presented have effects on what facial expressions are elicited but these facial expressions have no direct link or significant relationship and effects on the level of performance of the respondents and the facial expression elicited is not an indicator of the level of performance of the respondents. Keywords: facial action coding system, facial expression, level of performance
