Dissertation note: Thesis Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering University of Rizal System-Morong. 2019 Summary: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Philippines is a tropical island and it has only two seasons: the wet and dry season. Heavy rain and a steep mountain make a potentially disastrous combination. In mountainous terrain, infrastructure such as highways, railways and power generation facilities, as well as houses and apartment buildings, may be subject to rockfall hazards that can result in economic losses due to service interruptions, equipment and structural damage, and loss of life. In construction industries at present times, retaining walls are one of the structures that brought welfare to man through their various uses. The attempt to reduce the risks and casualties of rockfall is still an uncertainty up to these days. Thus, the study entitled Proposed Rockfall Protection Wall in Barangay Ithan, Binangonan, Rizal aimed to provide a detailed engineering design of rockfall protection wall that redirect rockfalls, and absorb energy uniformly during impact and to produce a scale model that shows the prototype of the final output of rockfall protection wall that will be beneficial to the residence of Purok 4, Sitio Sapang Bato, Brgy. Ithan, Binangonan, Rizal. This study was conducted from the second semester of the researcher's fourth school year 2017-2018 up to their first semester of fifth school year 2018-2019. To complete the purpose of the study, the researchers used developmental design method. The first stage of the study was the planning phase. This stage required the proposed retaining wall to be established including the general layout and dimensions of the structures. It was followed by data gathering and Preliminary Structural Design. The determination of preliminary member sizes and reinforcement content of the structural system was selected in planning phase. Next was the estimation of loads, where all expected load combination to be applied on the structure were determined. In structural analysis, the values of the loads were used to carry out the analysis of the structure in order to determine the stresses and deflections at various parts of the structures. The results of the analysis were used to determine whether or not the structure satisfied, if the structure satisfied the requirements, then the design drawings and construction specifications are prepared. The group used some theories and formulas in the computations for determining the appropriate shape and size of the structural members of the retaining wall. Because the group proposed a type of retaining wall which has a stability requirement, the group considered its specifications, strength capacity and parts. The study focused on providing a detailed architectural design and a scaled model of the structure. The structural design was solved using the principle of lateral earth pressure. Therefore, the structure will be safe, adequate and serviceable. The study recommends the future researchers to develop a design and computation of structural reinforcement for the retaining wall. Also, a construction cost estimation for the possible adaptation of this kind of development in the Municipality of Binangonan, Rizal.
