Dissertation note: Thesis (Bachelor of Science in Biology) -- University of Rizal System-Morong. Summary: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Study aimed to determine the effect of malagoso(Mollugo oppoitifolia Linn.) leaves extract in the induced blood glucose level of albino rats (Rattus norvegicus Berk.) This study was conducted at the University of Rizal System-Morong Campus during the year 2013-2014. The study concentrates on maximizing the capability and the uses of natural resources in the environment such as Malagoso Plant, which was the subject in this study. This plant is a very common weed and abundant at low and medium altitudes throughout the Philippines. It is slender, spreading or ascending smooth, branched, annual herb, with leaves are 1.5 to 3 centimeters long, 3 to 5 centimeters wide, This plant is exceptionally rich in iron and a good source of calcium. Its phytochemical screening yielded flavonoids saponins, terpenoids and tannins. Malagoso was collected at Caniogan, Morong, Rizal where available plants are present every summer season, the experiment on acclimatization was done at Bombongan, Morong, Rizal for the reason that it was more appropriate to conduct the experiment on that area because it has good ambiance and far from any disturbance that may affect the behavior of the albino rats particularly during the period of adaptation and experiment. The actual experimentation was done at University of Rizal System Morong, since the materials needed are present at the laboratory room and it is the proper place for performing the experiment since most of the researches are being conducted here. The study utilized the true experimental design, because it is regarded as the most accurate form of experimental research. This method helped the study to identify and settle on the changes that occur in the level of blood glucose of the control and experimental Albino Rats. Mean and standard deviation were used to determine the effects of malagoso leave extract on the blood glucose level of experimental, negative control and positive control group of albino rats before and after the administration. Meanwhile, dependent t-test was used to determine the significant difference on the effect of Malagoso leaves extract in the blood glucose level of experimental, negative control and positive control group of albino rats before and after the administration. The result showed statistically that, blood glucose level of albino rats is significantly different in different groups. The obtained mean before the administration was 3.72 and after the administration, the blood glucose level became 1.76 which showed some decrease in blood glucose level of albino rats. As a whole, the study conclude that the malagoso leaves extract has a potential to lower the blood glucose level of the albino rats and the effect of malagoso leaves extract in the blood glucose level was comparable to the effect of commercial drug. It is then recommended to determine the specific components that are present in Malagoso that can cause lowering of blood glucose. However, the study also recommends for further tests in utilizing the other parts of malagoso to prove the effectiveness of the plant not only in lowering glucose levels but also in other specific diseases. In addition, it is also recommends using the study as a reference for conducting other researches regarding the production of cheaper medicine.
