Dissertation note: Thesis (Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering) -- University of Rizal System-Morong. Summary: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The thesis entitled "Development of Furnace System Using Refuse Derived Fuel" is a research project which has a design mainly focusing on introducing the potential of solid waste as alternative fuel for production of steam. The furnace system consisted of small scale boiler which was used for the production of steam. Locally available materials were used for boiler were Freon tank and copper tube due to its capability of producing steam. Developmental research method was used since the study aimed to provide a new way of maximizing the used of solid waste in generating power and another alternative source of energy. Experimental research was applied by the researchers to maintain control over all factors that may affect the result of the study. The researchers utilized instruments that focused on the mechanical components of the furnace system considering in producing steam such as pressure gauge, temperature gauge and weighing scale. Based on the experimentation and computations made by the researchers in this project, it was presented that waste plastic material was effective and can be used as alternative fuel and another source of energy. According to the result presented showed the average enthalpy of the steam was 2601.3 KJ/Kg, average energy output of steam was 2499.41 KJ/Kg, and average efficiency of the steam was 55.54%. it was also found out that the fuel used will more effective if the system where it was tested is more operative which will result to increases its effectiveness. The device's level of acceptability in terms of its usefulness, maintenance, and functionality was perceived as Extremely Accepted after evaluation through questionnaire checklist by student and CIT instructor respondents, and expert engineers. Based on annual fuel utilization efficiency (AFUE), the researchers concluded that the Furnace System Using Refused Derived Fuel met all the conditions of a furnace system and passed the standard limit and falls under advance type of Furnace/Boiler.
