Employability of science teacher education program graduates

Online resources: Dissertation note: Thesis Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Biological Science University of Rizal System-Morong 2017 Summary: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This study was conducted to determine the employability of the Bachelor of Secondary Education graduated major in Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences class 2015 and 2016. The survey was done for 6 months through visits, online mode and interview. The researchers employed the descriptive research to survey and gather information from the respondents. The researchers used questionnaire-checklist to survey thirty-nine (39) graduated of the program with a response rate of 97.443 percent completing thirty eight (38) accomplished questionnaire-checklists out of thirty nine respondents. The frequency and percentage distribution were utilized to determine the profile of the respondents in terms of age, sex, eligibility and their reasons for having taken the specialization/program as well as their competencies learned in college, also to determine the nature of employment of the respondents in terms of nature of work, employment status, years of service, nature of employment, type of school and agency, month(s)/years before first employment, and monthly salary. The same statistical tools were used to determine how the respondents got their job. The findings revealed that the majority of the respondents were of age twenty-one (21) and more than half of the respondents were females and majority of the respondents passed the licensure examination for teachers. However, majority of the respondents' reason for having taken the program/specialization was being inspired by a former teacher and most of the respondents had acquired the teaching/pedagogical skills in college and facilitated ease of acquiring the job. They were also employed as secondary school teachers; some were contractual employees with six (6) months to one (1) year in service. In addition, majority of the respondents got their job in less than 3 months after graduation and most of them are working in private schools and agency. Further, most of the respondents recorded a salary of P 10,000.00 to P30, 000.00. most of them were informed about applying to teacher position through friends. Based from the findings of the study, it is concluded that majority of Bachelor of Secondary Education major in Biological Sciences and Physical Sciences graduated easily got their jobs after graduation and their current position/job is in lined with their chosen specialization in their Bachelor Degree. Recommendations include enrichment of the undergraduate teacher education program activities to address the problem on non-passers.
