Dissertation note: Thesis (Bachelor of Secondary Education major in English) -- University of Rizal System-Morong. Summary: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This study was conducted to identify and analyze the narrative technqiues used by Jay Asher in his novel Th1rteen R3asons Why using Narratology and to show the emerging importance of analyzing the character together with the plot in understanding the whole novel. This research was conducted at the University of Rizal System in Morong Rizal during the academic year 2016-2017. Descriptive Qualitative type of research was used to identify and analyze the information from the novel. The data in the study were gathered through the discussion and analysis of Jay Asher's novel Th1rteen R3asons Why using Narratology. The narrative technique were distinguished, analyzed and interpreted to know their function and effects in the novel. The findings showed that the analysis of the novel's narrative techniques together with their functions and effects helped to understand the way on how the author presented the story. In conclusion, Jay Asher's narrative techniques help in emphasizing the details that make up the whole narrative. The narrative techniques used shaped the structure of the novel as well as the way on how the information, character and situations are presented in the story. Analyzing the lead character's emotional weaknesses, intentions and motives, and disposition in life contributed to the idea that analyzing the characters together with the plot is important in analyzing the structure and meaning of the novel. After accomplishing the analysis and discussion of the narrative techniques used in the novel using Narratology, the researchers recommended to read other works of Jay Asher such as "The Future of Us", "What Light" and "Piper", and analyze them using Narratology to determine his style in writing.
