Dissertation note: Thesis (Bachelor of Science in Biology) -- University of Rizal System-Morong. Summary: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The upper tanay river has a fundamental role in the town of Tanay, Rizal as a tourist spot and source of water for recreational activity such as swimming, bathing, and skin diving. The upper Tanay river is one of the fresh water bodies which the Philippine Water Act aims to protect through implementation of law. Microbial parameters is one of the several parameters that are currently use to assess the quality of a water. Water quality provides the information that permits rational decision concern with the environment and health of people. This study that attempts to know whether the water quality of Upper Tanay river meets the satisfactory condition for recreational water was conducted during academic year 2017-2018 at University of Rizal System-Morong, Rizal. Microbial contamination in recreational water has potential risk to population where it is expose. Immersion and ingestion is likely to happen in this water bodies. Feces come from animal and specifically from human might harbor enteric and pathogenic bacteria that may cause adverse effectr to the health of individual. For these reason, fecal indicator bacteria are commonly used approach. In this study, three river site namely, Paglitaw, Daranak and Daong are subjected to bacteriological analysis in three sampling days. This includes the Fecal coliform test, biochemical testing of Escherichia coli, Heterotrophic Plate Count (HPC), and identification of Bacterial Isolates. Results show that all river site in three sampling days exceeds with the guidelines stipulated in DENR Administrative order 08, series of 2016, thus possess risks to those utilize the rivers for recreational activity. In terms of abundance of viable bacteria, Daranak river is relatively high to the two rivers while Paglitaw river is the lowest. Escherichia coli was present in all water samples. Feca; bacteria such as citrobacter spp., specifically citrobacter freundii, Proteus mirabilis and Enterobacter cloacae was isolated in the water samples. The study concluded that the three tivers namely Paglitaw, Daranak and Daong is not suitable for recreational activity and may impose risk to people who utilize it.
