Experimental Research Methodology
Thesis BSF University of Rizal System. Cardona 2014
The study emphasized the acceptability of Water hyacinth on different level on vermiculture as a new substrate on the bedding material for culture of African night crawlers (Eudrilus eugeniae) on 0.25m x 0.25m x 0.2m vermibed. The study was conducted for 1 month and sampling was done by initial and final sampling of weight of African night crawlers (E. eugeniae). Four treatment were used in the study with the same stocking density and different mixture of bedding materials: treatment I with the mixture of 100% trash vegetable, madre cacao and cow and manure fed for the african night crawlers (E. eugeniae); treatment II substituting the trash vegetable to water hyacinth with the mixture of 750 g of Water hyacinth, 250g of Madre cacao and 500g of cow mature fed to African night crawlers (E. eugeniae); treatment III with the mixture of 500 g of water hyacinth, 500 g of Madre cacao and 500g of cow manure fed to African night crawlers (E. eugeniae); treatment IV with the mixture of 250g of water hyacinth 750g of madre cacao 500g of cow manure fed to African night crawlers (E. eugeniae). The researcher focused on the acceptability of Water Hyacinth at a different level of substituting the trash vegetable as a new nitrogen source for the bedding material for the growth in weight and producing fertilizer on the culture of African night crawlers (E. eugeniae). Preparation of bedding materials used in treatment II, III, IV were collected in different areas where the resources are available, only the leaves of the water hyacinth and made cacao were utilized. The leaves were cut into small pieces and placed on a sack fo 15 days for anaerobic decomposition of all bedding materials, including the cow manure. The anaerobic decomposition was used to the substances for culturing bacteria on the leaves and cow manure to produce large amount of bacteria on the substrates. The experiment started at February 16, 2013 to March 02, 2013 with the duration of 15 days anaerobic decomposition and 30 days culture of African night crawlers (E. eugeniae). The result of the study shows that treatment III (500 g of water hyacinth, 500g of madre cacao, and 500g cow manure) African night crawler (E. eugeniae) recorded a biomass of 10.2g; while treatment II (720g water hyacinth 250g of madre cacao and 500g cow manure) African night crawler (E. eugeniae) got 5.8g biomass; treatment I (100% trash vegetable included the madre cacao and cow manure ) African night crawler (E. eugeniae) recorded -16.5g biomass; and treatment IV (250g of water hyacinth, 750 g of madre cacao and 500g of cow manure) African night crawler (E. eugeniae) recorded -17.7g biomass. According to the result of the conducted study and the computation of gathered data, the acceptability of water hyacinth as a substitute nitrogen source rather than to trash vegetables had a good effect on the culture of African night crawlers (E. eugeniae). The study revealed that the Water hyacinth used as a substrate on the bedding material for the vermiculture had a better effect on producing vermicast and culturing of African night crawlers (E. eugeniae).
