Dissertation note: Thesis BSF University of Rizal System. Cardona 2016 Summary: This study was conducted to determine the perceptions of fishermen to the importance, problems, and current issues of the presence of fishpens and fish cages in Municipalities of Cardona and Binangonan, Province of Rizal. The profile of fishermen respondents were used as variables such as age, educational attainment, fishing gears used, and numbers of years in fishing. This study used the descriptive method of research. Data gathering was conducted by using questionnaire-checklist and interview. Purposive sampling was used in selection of respondents. The study was conducted in the 2nd semester of academic year 2014-2015. Frequency, percentage rank distribution, weighted mean and two-way analysis of variance were utilized to analyse and interpret the data. In terms of the profile of the 365 respondents, 133 are aged 41-50 years old; 175 attained elementary level of education; 189 are using seine net (pukot) in fishing; and 166 have 11-20 years of fishing experience. In terms of importance of fishpens and fish cages, the respondents agree that fishpens and fish cages provide additional source of income and opportunities for permanent employment to the fishermen but fail to contribute to the development of the immediate community. Regarding social problems brought about by the presence of fishpens and fish cages, the main concerns of respondents are the illegal fishpens and fish cages and the subsequent reduction of areas left to them for fishing. Obstruction of navigational lanes is a mirror concern for fishermen. Water pollution in the lake caused by the presence of fishpens and fish cages and contribution to algal bloom are oerceived as major environmental problems. However, the presence of fishpens and fish cages is considered o have no direct relation to problem of water hyacinth. The current issues agreed upon by fishermen are those that area allotted for fishpens and fish cages should be reduced along with corporate ownership af fishpens and fish cages. On the contrary, they disagree to the total dismantling of fishpens and fish cages.
