This study aimed to observe and find out the competencies developed in solving Mathematical problems of the selected Grade 10 students in South Ville 8C National High School. The respondents were composed of 15 students from three different sections that were observed in this study
The researchers used observation checklist which is a design of descriptive- qualitative method of research
Based on the specific problems given and on the analysis of data gathered, the following were obtained
In terms of competencies developed in solving mathematical problems, most of the students can identify the problem and find the given with an ease. However, they find it difficult in sketching/illustrating/visualizing, applying the formula and finding the answer Eventually, most of the students do not come up with the correct answer
Most of the respondents encountered some problems like recalling of the formulas, applying the fundamental operations, and simplifying the final answer
To avoid committing mistakes and experiencing these difficulties in solving Mathematical problems, researchers suggested that the use of symbolization for the different operations and rules could make it much easier for the respondents to memorize the formulas. Always remember the rules in Adding and Subtracting Integers, and the Laws of Exponent. Although these are all basics in solving Mathematical problems, somehow the respondents forgot all of these when they are applying the formula. Mastery of skills in solving word problems should also be focused on. Exposure of the students to the different word problems will also help them to improve their selves and developed their different skills very well.
