EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This study was conducted at Morong Laboratory School Morong, Rizal, During the academic year 2015-2016. This aimed to determine the effects of text messaging on the academic performance and spelling proficiency of the intermediate pupils. The subject of this study consisted of selected sixty (60) intermediate pupils. This study used the descriptive method since its chief purpose is to determine the effect of text messaging on the academic performance and spelling proficiency of the respondents. Frequency and percentage distribution, mean and Pearson-r were used to determine the extent of use text messaging, the level of academic performance in English, and the significant relationship between the level of spelling proficiency and the extent of use of text messaging among intermediate pupils respectively. The findings revealed that there is no significant relationship between the extent use of text messaging and the level of academic performance; there is no significant relationship between the extent of use of text messaging and the level of spelling proficiency; and there is no significant relationship between the academic performance and spelling proficiency of the respondents. Based on the foregoing, it was concluded that the extent of use of text messaging does not affect the academic performance and spelling proficiency of the intermediate pupils. Based on the foregoing findings and conclusions, it was recommended that intermediate pupils must continuously utilize correct spelling of words in text messaging and parallel studies may be conducted using other variables.
