SOCIAL AND CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF THE COMMUNICATION PROCESS IN THE TWO SELECTED INDEPENDENT FILMS EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This study was conducted to analyze the effect of society and culture to communication in the two selected independent films. The films used were "#Y "directed by Gino M. Santos and "Ekstra" by Jeffrey Jeturian. The study used descriptive-qualitative method of research utilizing social and cultural analysis. Findings showed in the film "#Y" that society has a great impact on the conversation presented on chapter three especially that the characters in the film represented the generation Y in the upper class strata. The age of the participants, their status, their gender, the relationship among them affected the topic they are talking about, the way they speak to each other and the language they use. Filipino values and attitudes, a part of Filipino culture, affected the way the characters in the movie converse with each other. They are somehow bounded by these attitudes and values in the way they speak and behave in the communication process. In the film Ekstra, the way of characters speak varies as shown in the said film especially to those who have an authority over them. In their job it seems natural for them to utter immoral words. Also, some values and traits of Filipinos were shown by the characters which are cultural in nature like hospitality, respect to the elders and "pakikisama" which affected the communication process among them. Based on the findings and conclusions of the study, it is recommended that teachers should encourage students, who are majoring in English to use viewing skills in teaching, understanding and analysis of communication process and consider indie films in meaningful conduct of language researches. Further studies must be conducted utilizing other variables is also recommended.
