Dissertation note: Thesis (Bachelor of Science in Psychology) -- University of Rizal System-Morong. Summary: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This study was entitled "ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES AND LATER RISK OF ALCOHOLISM AND DEPRESSION". This research aimed to find the possible risk of alcoholism and depression to the individuals who had adverse childhood experiences. The researchers picked 8 respondents, 4 individuals who are alcoholic and 4 individuals who suffered from depression in Rizal. For it has a close vicinity to the researcher's location. The study is anchored by Sigmund Freud's Psychoanalytic Theory which states that a person's unique character type develops in childhood largely from parent-child interactions. The child tries to maximize pleasure by satisfying the id demands, while parents, as representative of society, try to impose the demands of reality and morality. So important did Freud consider childhood experiences that he said the adult personality was firmly shaped and crystalized by the fifth year of life. What persuaded him that these early years are crucial were his own childhood memories and the memories revealed by his adult patients. Invariably, as his patients lay on his psychoanalytic couch, they reached far back into childhood. Increasingly, Freud perceived that the adult neurosis had been formed in the early years of life. The data gathered were recorded and analyzed. To describe how adverse childhood experiences caused the respondents' alcoholism and depression, interview and triangulation method were used. Based on the gathered data, the researchers concluded that a child who had adverse childhood experiences has a risk on being an alcoholic or suffering from depression. Based on the findings, the researchers recommended to The Government that they may conduct seminars or programs regarding the possible effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences and its consequences. So that the family most especially the parents or caregivers will be aware to prevent it. The local government may coordinate with the parents to encourage them to undergo Family System Therapy which focuses on the development of family relationships. The Department of Health together with the Legislative department may implement the nationwide liquor ban to lessen the increasing number of alcohol dependents and to keep them away from the harmful effects of alcohol in their body. The Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education may include subjects that will raise awareness about the importance of mental health.
