Behavioral issues and the academic performance of elementary

Dissertation note: Thesisi Master of Arts in Education major in Educational Management University of Rizal System-Morong 2018 Summary: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: This research was conducted to assess the behavioral issues and academic performance of elementary grades learners in eight (8) elementary schools of taytay II district year 2016-2017. Particularly, it determined the level of academic performance of elementary grades learners of taytay II district subjects such as English, mathematics, and science and health. It also measured the extent of behavioral issues exhibited of the learners as assessed by themselves and the teachers with respect to tardiness and absenteeism, classroom behavior, interpersonal skills, and compliance to the requirements. It also determined the significant relationship between academic performance and behavioral issues of the learners. Furthermore, significant difference on the perceptions of the two groups of respondents on the extent of behavioral issues was also inquired on. The respondents of the study were the teachers and the grade six learners. The researchers considered their performance during grade four to grade six in the eight schools in taytay II district who were randomly selected. The study employed the descriptive correlation methods of research. This also made use of researcher made questionnaire-checklist for the perceptions of the two groups of respondents. Moreover, documentary analysis was considered for the academic performance in English, mathematic, and science and health for the school years 2014-2015, 2015-2016, and 2016-2017. The problems were answered with appropriate statistical tools, and the data were computed, tabulated, analyzed and interpreted to draw out relevant implications. The study found out that in general, learners got grade point average of 80.50 interpreted as satisfactory. Specifically, in science they obtained fairly satisfactory rating from grade four to grade five and improved to satisfactory in grade six. Tardiness and absenteeism, classroom behavior, interpersonal skills, classroom participation, and compliance to the requirements were sometimes observed by the learners as observed by the teachers and the learners themselves. There was no significant relationship between the behavioral issues and academic performance in English and science and health while, significant relationship was noted in mathematics. There was a significant difference with behavioral issues of elementary grade learners in terms of the aspects. The paper concluded that the learners study very well to get higher academic performance. The behaviors of the learners are tolerable where good classroom management by the teachers' could help lessen their academic performance.
