The Weight of Love is an extremely erudite and well‐researched book that illustrates the complexity of what scholars call 'affective' devotion in the high Middle Ages by means of detailed analyses of works of one of its most celebrated writers, the thirteenth-century Franciscan theologian Giovanni di Fidanza, otherwise known as St. Bonaventure. This innovative book responds to contemporary scholarship on mysticism, affective devotion, and medieval theology and natural philosophy.
