Dissertation note: Undergraduate Thesis Bachelor of secondary Education University of Rizal System, Rodriguez, Rizal 20215 Summary: This study aimed to know the effects of social media on the study habits of Grade 7 students in San Jose National High School. Fifteen (15) students from one section were purposely selected. The researchers used descriptive qualitative research methods that describe the situation of the study. A case study technique was employed which involved to study an individual unit or social group that usually emphasized the relationship with the environment. Most of the students used different types of social media. Most of them had access in Facebook and YouTube. 13 out of 15 respondents had an account in Facebook, 11 out of 15 respondents had YouTube accounts, 4 out of 15 respondents had Twitter, Instagram and Wattpad and 5 out of 15 respondents had access in different Online Games. Based on the study, all respondents used their Social Media accounts for personal purposes such as to communicate with their relatives, friends and loved ones. 9 out of 15 respondents used social media to play online games. 12 out of 15 respondents used social media to watch, share, likes, comment and upload videos. On how social media affected the study habits of the respondents in terms of attending class, 10 out of 15 respondents attended regularly. 5 out of 15 respondents often came late. In terms of reviewing lesson, 9 out of 15 respondents were negatively affected their studying since they enjoyed more on chatting, watching videos and playing games than to read their lesson. But some of them browsed their social media to access in different educational site. In terms of their class standing, 14 out of 15 respondents' average grades increased and only one of the respondent's average grades decreased. On the advantages of using the social media they enumerated that: It was being used to moderate messages board and useful resources related to school; It used as a medium to connect and collaborate with classmates about the lesson and academic projects; It used to build connections and information with people and organizations they choose to interact with online; It was easy to access users to share, view video content and upload. The following were the disadvantages of using social media derived from the respondents: Some stayed up late since they enjoyed browsing social media that enabled them not to read their lesson before going to school. Some of them escaped meals. The following were suggested by the respondents to improve study habits; Do first assignment and related school projects before surfing social media accounts. The students should also limit the time they spent in using social media so that they have enough time to study their lesson. Based on summary of findings, the following conclusions were drawn: The popular social media that the students used were Facebook, YouTube and Online Games. The respondents used social media to communicate, share information and play on line games. Social Media affects the study habit of the respondents in terms of reviewing lesson since many of them used it as an aid to study their lesson. Most of the students agreed that social media have advantage on them especially in sharing information regarding in school, chatting. communicating with their friends and families. Based on the findings and conclusion the researchers suggested that: Grade 7 Students should develop their awareness about using social media because affect their study habits. They should manage and limit the time in spending social media and use them properly. Parents should encourage and guide their children in using social media. They should have rules in using social media to control their children in addiction and sleepless night. Teachers should encourage their students to limit the time of using social media. They should not allow them to use gadgets such as laptop, smart phones, IPod and Tablet during class hours. Future teachers should be aware to monitor their students who are using social media. Computer Shop Owners should not allow the students to rent computer who are wearing school uniforms and during class hours. School Officials should conduct seminars to the students in using social media properly.
