Undergraduate Thesis
This study aimed to determine the solid waste management of the relocated settlers of Southville 8B San Isidro Rodriguez, Rizal. The primary data was obtained from the answers of the participants of the study which comprised of 5 selected families of Southville 8B San Isidro Rodriguez, Rizal They are selected randomly according to their house number and their nearness on affected area
In terms of the profile of the respondents, a total of five (5) cases were interviewed, four (4) of them were female and one (1) was male. Respondents' family income ranges from Php. 3000 to 7000 monthly. Three (3) of five (5) cases attained secondary Education and two (2) of them were elementary graduates. Three (3) of them were working full-time, whereas the remaining two 2 were jobless. Among those who were working full time, one is a vegetable vendor, a cashier and a beautician.
In Management of their waste in terms of segregation, all of the respondents answered that they do not segregate their wastes. Biodegradable and non-biodegradable wastes are located in the same receptacles Some respondents, considered segregation as a waste of time and just an additional burden because this was not part of their daily routine, on the other hand. respondents who came from cities already have established waste management program exercise segregating procedures. In terms of recycling, case all of the respondents recycle their wastes, specifically, the non-biodegradable waste like plastics and other scraps that can be sold. On the other side, some who are well informed, practiced reducing, reusing, and recycling procedures. In term of composting, cases 1, 2, 3 and 4 says that they do not compost their biodegradable wastes, instead they put all their waste on the trash bin. Although case 5 used composting, he is doing it in a wrong manner because they dump all their waste on compost pit. In terms of collection, all of the respondents answered that at least once a week, the garbage collector collects their wastes usually during Thursday. However, there are some cases that the garbage collectors were not able to collect the garbage on the other part of the area. The solid waste management practices of the respondents had detrimental effects to their environment and health. Environmental problems like air, land and water pollution have been encountered by the respondents due to their malpractices in managing their waste. Malpractices of the respondent in managing their wastes gave rise to some health problems like flu, fever, common colds, cough and dengue
Water pollution occurs due to the wastes dumped on the land and also into bodies of water by the discharge of waste water from residential waste (intentionally or through spills) into surface waters, discharges of untreated domestic sewage, release of waste and contaminants into surface runoff flowing to surface waters.
Increasing awareness and understanding of waste issues and opportunities has been identified as a high priority. As a result, the researchers proposed action plan which aims to deliver effective and integrated waste communication and education programs that will build the peoples capacity on moving towards to more effective waste management.
Based on the findings of this study, the following conclusions were
formulated:
Female respondent out numbered male respondent, all of the them have monthly income that ranges from 3,000-7,000 Php, most of them attained high school, while most of them are full-time working. All of the respondents, do not segregate and compost, all of them practice recycling for extra income and all of them throw their wastes during weekly garbage collection.
The common environmental and health problems encountered by the respondents are improper waste disposal, polluted river, clogged drainage mountain of garbage and dirty creeks. They also encountered health problems most are as coughs, common colds, fever, flu and dengue. The children are the ones who always experienced these health problems the most.
A proposed action plan which aims to deliver effective and integrated waste communication and education programs. The people in the community should actively participate in the program of the locality
Based on above findings and conclusions, the following recommendations are proposed to the Barangay Officials to ensure proper waste management in Southville BB San Isidro Rodriguez, Rizal
The following measures have been recommended to ensure effective and efficient waste management in Southville 88 San Isidro Rodriguez. Rizal. It is unquestionable that it won't be easy, but it is pivotal that it succeeds if we are to have a clear roadmap to the future and determine what is just the right way to managing Southville 8B San Isidro Rodriguez, Rizal's wastes Provision of Skips
Having identified that the major problem facing the solid waste management in Southville 8B San Isidro, Rodriguez, Rizal is a general inadequacy of skip containers, it is hereby recommended that more skip containers should be provided to give residents the opportunity to dispose their waste properly. This is a very conservative figure, and could be more if the whole settlement is covered.
Education of Residents
The provision of skips coupled with a rigorous public education would be the key to transforming solid waste management in Southville 8B San Isidro Rodriguez, Rizal for the better. Most residents do not understand why they should dump in skip containers, when they can just throw the refuse in front of their homes. Habits cannot be changed in a snapshot but with persistence, there would be a breakthrough
Regular Collection
The current system collection where garbage containers are emptied once a week to change. The recommendation here is that the garbage containers be emptied twice a week, especially in areas that are too far from the main road where the garbage containers get full speedily. When the garbage containers are emptied on time, it will mitigate the current situation.
Also a proposed action plan as recommended by the researchers will help locality.
