The study was conducted to determine the effects of cage and tank culture on the growth and survival of Xiphophorous helleri at 1% level of probability. Two treatments with three replicates were utilized. Treatment 1 Xiphophorous helleri was cultured in fish cage in Laguna de Bay and treatment 2 was cultured in tank. Feeding of treatment I and II was done twice a day, every 9:00 am and 4:00 pm. Two-group design was utilized as the experimental design of the study and t-test as the statistical treatment in determining its significant difference. The experiment started on the 5th day of August 2005 and was terminated last September 05 2005 with the duration of 30 days culture. Data was gathered through sampling every 15 days of interval to constantly monitor the length and weight increment of the swordtail. Based on the experiment, Treatment I gave the best result since Xiphophorous helleri attained a length increment of 4.6 cm and 3 grams of weight increment while treatment II the Xiphophorous helleri reached only 2.7 cm leght increment and 1.44 grams of weight increment. Based on the result using Chi-Square, the computed x² value is 0.2 is less than the tabular value of 3.841. Thus the null hypothesis is accepted proving that there is no significant difference on the survival of Xiphophorous helleri cultured in fish cage and in tanks. Based on the result using T-test the computed t-value is 2.76 in terms of length and 3.25 terms of weight are less than the tabular value of 9.925. Thus the null hypothesis is accepted proving that there is no significant difference on the survival of Xiphophorous helleri cultured in the fish cage and in tanks. Based on the result of the study, there are factors directly affecting the growth and survival of the species cultured. Weather condition and their natural environment are among the factors that may cause great mortality on the fish. In terms of appearance Xiphophorous helleri cultured in fish cage and in tanks are almost the same although the one cultured in fish cage is longer and heavier than those cultured in tanks. Therefore, culturing of the aquarium fish like Xiphophorous helleri using cage in Laguna de Bay are viable on this study provided that weather condition shall take into account.
