Summary, etc. Generally, this study aimed to develop a renewable energy source biofuel briquette utilizing the HYAFFEE (water hyacinth and coffee ground) mixture. Specifically, this study sought to produce biofuel briquettes made up of HYAFFEE mixture for cooking application. It tests the effectiveness of HYAFFEE biofuel briquette in terms of moisture content, volatile combustible matter, ash content, fixed carbon, and calorific value. To determine the quality of HYAFFEE biofuel briquettes, a developmental process was done to test the HYAFFEE mixture in terms of the aforementioned parameters. It also evaluated the acceptability of HYAFFEE biofuel briquette as an alternative energy source in terms of functional suitability, maintainability, reliability, safety, and usability. The developed product TITLE : HYAFFEE: A BIOFUEL BRIQUETTE UTILIZING WATER HYACINTH AND COFFEE GROUND MIXTURE AUTHORS : Kerby Clark C. Buncaras Michelle Ann V. Corral John Elis Gabriel A. Dilagan Ericka D. Montealegre COURSE : Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering ACADEMIC YEAR : 2023 - 2024 TYPE OF DOCUMENT : Undergraduate Thesis TOTAL NO. OF PAGES : 80 NAME AND ADDRESS OF INSTITUTION : University of Rizal System Morong, Rizal vii HYAFFEE biofuel briquette was tested for seven (7) days drying method of the freshwater hyacinth for the briquetting process. In guiding the research in attaining the intended objectives, developmental research methods were considered. The developed HYAFFEE biofuel briquette, and briquetting process were evaluated through a researcher-modified questionnaire. The HYAFFEE biofuel briquette produced by the sun-drying method was tested by the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory center, and evaluated by the expert and end-user respondents. The HYAFFEE biofuel briquette went through the briquetting process. The sequential briquetting steps are the preparation of raw materials to perform the carbonization process where water hyacinth and coconut husk were burned. Next is the cooling of the burnt materials so that they can be placed in the shredding machine together with the coffee ground. Once the components are pulverized, they can be added with cornstarch which served as a binder addition. When there is a binder it can be put in the mixing machine. Once the consistency of the mixed components is obtained, they can be put into the molding machine which can produce 120 to 150 pieces of briquettes, and finally, the sun-drying method completes the process. As the results of the parameters modified through the laboratory testing, the HYAFFEE biofuel briquette has the high quality of standard charcoal and is suitable for use in cooking applications. Based on the results of the evaluation, the HYAFFEE biofuel briquette was “Highly Acceptable” by the respondents in terms of functional suitability, reliability, safety, and usability, while “Acceptable” for viii maintainability. The overall weighted mean has a verbal interpretation of “Highly Acceptable”. Among the parameters evaluated, reliability has the highest rated mean because the respondents believe that the HYAFFEE biofuel briquette is viable, practical, accessible, and can help with water waste environmental problems. The study concluded that the water hyacinth and coffee ground mixture can be used to produce quality biofuel briquettes that serve as an alternative renewable energy source. HYAFFEE biofuel briquette can relatively produce more intense heat than other solidified biofuel. The researchers recommend a further study to attain more efficient and effective components of biofuel briquette. Another recommendation is for future researchers to design and develop biofuel briquettes that can replace natural firewood and raw biomass, providing customers with low-cost biofuel that emits less smoke and offers higher calorific energy value.
