| 520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. | |
| Summary, etc | The study aimed to analyze the mathematics competencies of grade 9 students of New Era High School in the Division of Quezon City in terms of cognitive, psychomotor and affective domain in algebra. The topics were quadratic equations, quadratic function, variation and radicals. The study covered the Academic Year 2020-2021

This study used convergent parallel mixed method design. It involves the simultaneous collection of qualitative and quantitative data

The respondents of the study were 50 selected grade 9 students of New Era High School using the simple random sampling. Purposive sampling was used to select 30 respondents that was interviewed to know the strength and weaknesses in solving algebra.

Based on the findings, In terms of cognitive domain, most of the respondents displayed Comprehension level of competency For the psychomotor domain, the students are under the level of precision. In the affective domain, most of the respondents were under the organization level. The strength of the respondents in algebra as shown by the level of competencies are Illustrating quadratic equations, solve equation transformable to quadratic equations. modelling real-life situation using quadratic functions, determining the equation of quadratic functions, illustrating situation that involves direct variation, apply the laws involving positive integral exponents, simplify expressions with rational exponents, use the laws of radicals and write expressions with fractional exponents as radicals While their weaknesses are describing the relationship between the coefficients of the root

of quadratic equations, discussing graph of the quadratic function, finding the domain and the range of the quadratic function, illustrating situation that involves inverse and joint variation, and translating into variation statement a relationship between two quantities given by table of values and mathematical equations

The lack of interest arising from the thought that the subject is difficult leads to poor performance. The contributory factors on the weakness of the students in algebra are weak foundation in mathematics, mindset that mathematics is a difficult subject, interest in mathematics subject, and distracted learning environment

Most of the respondents have the ability to grasp the meaning of material by translating words to numbers, explaining or summarizing and predicting consequences or effects and interpreting, were able to reproduce a skill with accuracy, proportion and exactness, and accept professional and ethical standards, organized values into priorities by contrasting different values The respondents can deal with some learning competencies in quadratic equations, direct variations and radicals. And have perseverance in solving the said competencies. But they have difficulties in other learning competencies in grade 9 mathematics such as finding the domain and the range of quadratic functions and solving inverse and joint variations. Usage of the rubrics is useful to assess student's performance and knowing their knowledge and difficulties in algebra. Foundation is very important in learning subsequent topics in mathematics. Students who believed that mathematics is a hard subject has lower comprehension level. The lack of concentration among students may lead to difficulty in understanding the problem in algebra and its solution. The school administrators and teachers may assist and give emphasis on the Instructional materials in mathematics that will cater to the needs and abilities of the students. |
