This study aimed to know the difficulties encountered by the first year students of Montalban Heights National High School in Translating verbal phrases into mathematical statements. It involved 90 students as respondents of the study. The descriptive method of research was used with the questionnaire as the main instrument to gather data. The frequency and percentage distributions were used to show the profile of the respondents particularly to the sex, school graduated from and parents educational attainment. The computed mean was utilized to show if there were difficulties encountered by the respondents in translating verbal phrases into mathematical statement. The t-test and one way ANOVA were employed to find out if there exist a significant difference between the difficulties of the respondents with regards to their profile.
The computed mean of the Difficulties Encountered in Translating Verbal Phrases into Mathematical Statement of the respondents was 14 verbally interpreted easy. The null hypothesis which stated that there was no significant difference between the difficulties of the respondents in translating verbal phrases into mathematical statement as to their sex, school graduated from and parents educational attainment is failed to reject.
On the basis of findings and conclusions, the researchers concluded that majority of the respondents were female and came from public schools. While in terms of their parents educational attainment most of the respondent's parents were high school graduates. The respondents have less difficulty in translating verbal phrases into mathematical statement. There was no significant difference on the difficulties in translating verbal phrases into mathematical statement in terms of sex, school graduated from and parents educational attainment. The researchers also recommend that the mathematics teachers should be motivated to challenge their students and gave much more difficult problems. Parents must appreciate the good feedbacks, efforts and achievements of their children.
