Level of Literacy on Journalistic Jargons of Student Journalists in University of Rizal System Angono Campus.

Online resources: Summary: The study aimed to determine whether student journalists at University of Rizal System Angono are knowledgeable of journalistic jargon. The study utilized a quantitative research design for an accurate collection of data. Through stratified random sampling, a 10% sample size margin of the overall population was utilized in selecting its respondents which led to 16 student-journalists from 1st to 4th Year of AB Journalism. A 45-item multiple-choice questionnaire was administered to chosen respondents consisting of 3 categories: Newspaper Jargons, Newsroom Jargons and Broadcast Jargons which are inclined on the courses offered under the AB Journalism with 15 questions each. From the answers gathered in the questionnaire, the results are categorized through the verbal interpretations quantified in the modified Likert Scale. The study revealed that only 1st year student-journalists have low level of literacy while 2nd and 3rd year students have middle level literacy. On the other hand, 4th year student journalists have high level literacy. Therefore, there are differences between literacy and a higher year level means higher literacy in Newspaper Jargons, Newsroom Jargons and Broadcast Jargons. The results indicated that the student-journalists of URS Angono campus had middle level literacy with an overall mean score of 5.79. In conclusion, student journalists are familiar with journalistic jargon but are not well-versed in them. However, much-needed preparation should still be practiced to truly become equipped for the field and the workplace of media.
