Summary:
The study aimed to develop, validate and determine the acceptability of modules on selected topics in Science and Technology for Grade 7 students, conducted during the second semester, school year 2013-2014 at Burgos National High School with 30 student respondents selected randomly and 10 science teacher respondents who served as the experts.
The instruments used in the study were multiple choice questionnaires with sixty items based on the topics from the modules. Then, modules which comprise topics in accordance with the content of K-12 Curriculum first quarter such as; The Investigatory Process, Solutions, Acids and Bases, Substances and Mixtures, Elements and Compounds, and Metals and Nonmetals.
The study used the Single Group Pretest-Posttest design of experimental method that compares and reveals the difference of the mean scores of the pre-test and post test. Also, the Evaluative Design of the descriptive method was used to gather and interpret the data from the respondents.
The problems were discussed utilizing the appropriate statistical tools such as mean, frequency, percentage distribution and T-test to determine the performance level of the students in Science and technology and to determine the acceptability of the modules. Also, t-test was used to determine if there is a significant difference between the performance level of the respondents in the pre-test and post-test.
Based on the analysis of the gathered data, the following findings were summarized and interpreted. The mean of the respondents in terms of their pre-test was 20.71 with a verbal interpretation of poor performance and 39.3 was their mean in post-test with a verbal interpretation of satisfactory performance. Regarding the significant difference in the performance of grade 7 students in Science and Technology, it showed that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post test mean scores of the respondents since the p-value 0.000 is less than 0.05 level of significance. Thus the null hypothesis failed to be rejected. On the level of acceptability of modules, the experts from Burgos National High school assessed the modules in terms of its objectives, contents, activities, organization, creativity, styles and presentation, and evaluation. In objectives, the teacher respondents obtained an average of 4.52 with a verbal interpretation of very acceptable. In contents, the teacher respondents obtained anaverage of 4.70 with averbal interpretation of very acceptable. In terms of creativity and organization, both criteria garnered a mean of 4.60 with a verbal interpretation of very acceptable. In terms of style and presentation, the teacher respondents obtained an average mean of 4.62 with a verbal interpretation of very acceptable. And lastly in terms of evaluation, the teacher respondents obtained an average of 4.44 with a verbal interpretation of very acceptable.
The respondents performed poorly in the pre test however, after exposing the students to the instructional materials their performance became satisfactory as shown by the result of their post test. There is a significant difference between the result of the pre-test and post-test. The instruments were evaluated by the teacher respondents as very acceptable.
On the basis of findings and conclusion, the researchers highly recommend that the students use the instructional materials to become independent learners and develop their critical thinking. Teachers should then concentrate on their becoming effective facilitators to the students. It is also recommended for the teachers to develop their own instructional materials that they may use in teaching their students. Parents may also be a part in looking after the students while using the modules since students can bring the materials home. It can be used as the instructional materials for the grade 7 in Science and Technology. The developed modules are subject for revision depending on the needs of the students.
