Undergraduate Thesis Bachelor of Elementary Education University of Rizal System, Rodriguez, Rizal 2010
This study aimed to determine the factors that affect the mathematical skills acquisition of selected grade VI pupils at Kasiglahan Village Elementary School. This was conducted during the school year 2009-2010 at Kasiglahan Village San Jose, Rodriguez, Rizal. The researchers used the descriptive analysis method of research to describe the nature of the prevailing situation during the conduct of the study. A validated 30 item questionnaire checklist was administered to the respondents. The respondents of the study were the 116 taken through random sampling from the total population of 972 grade VI pupils at the Kasiglahan Village Elementary school, S.Y.2009. The researchers used frequency, percentage distribution and ranking to get the profile of the respondents. Mean was used to get the factors affecting the mathematical skills acquisition of the respondents. T-test and one-way ANOVA were used to find out if there is significant difference between the profile of the respondents and the factors affecting their mathematical skills acquisition.
On the Summary of Findings: Out of 116 respondents, 66.58% are females and the rest are male; 50% of the respondents are 12 years old, 27.59% are 15 yсах old, 12.07% are 14 years old and above while the remaining 10.34% are 11 years old, 54.48% of the respondents have monthly family income of 2,500 below, aim 34.48% of the respondents have monthly family income of 3,500-4,000 while the remaining 31.05% have monthly family income of 5,000 and above, 50. 86% are high school graduate, 27.59% are college graduate and the remaining 21.55% are elementary graduate, 51.72% of the respondents got a grade ranging from 80-84, 4.31% of the respondents got a grade ranging from 90 and above while the remaining 3.54% of the respondents got a grade ranging from 85-89. The findings imply that majority of the respondents were female and half of them are 12 years old. Their monthly family income range from below 2,500-4,000 and most of the respondents' average grade in mathematics V ranges from 75-84. On the factor that affect the mathematical skills acquisition of grade V pupils, majority of the respondents perceived that teacher who provides instructional materials that are attractive and arouse interest during discussion often affects the mathematical skills acquisition of the respondents, it also revealed that the family of the respondents often tries to acknowledge their efforts by giving incentives or rewards on their academic performance of the day and lastly, personal factor revealed that the respondents thought that they could often do more difficult math work. On the Conclusions: There is significant difference between the age, monthly family income, parent's educational attainment, average grade in mathematics V and the factors affecting the mathematical skills acquisition of the respondents. On the other hand, there is no significant difference between the sex of the respondents and the factors affecting the mathematical skills acquisition of the respondents. The researchers found out that the age affects the learning of the students regarding mathematics. On the Recommendation: At the young age of the learners, the teacher r even the parents should introduce mathematics as an interesting subject. The teacher should also enlighten the minds of the learners with the use of more attractive instructional materials in order to arouse their interest. The teacher should have positive outlook upon teaching his/her students. He/she should also give more attention to those pupils who have poor understanding to the said subject and inform the parents regarding the trend of the performance of the pupils in every grading period.
