The study aimed to determine the Extent of the Influence of Social Media Platforms on Students’ Speaking Skills. The study was conducted at University of Rizal System Cainta Campus on School Year 2023-2024. There were a total of eighty-nine (89) respondents, twenty (20) male and sixty-nine (69) female, all from BSEd English from first year to fourth year. The respondents were chosen using random sampling technique.
The study used the descriptive method of research, utilized researcher-made questionnaire checklists along with frequency, percentage, rank distribution, and mean as statistical treatment.
The researchers used a researcher-made questionnaire checklist to determine the Extent of the Influence of Social Media Platforms on Students’ Speaking Skills with respect to Grammar, Vocabulary, and Pronunciation.
On the profile of the respondents in terms of age, majority of the respondents were 20-21 years old; in terms of sex, majority of the respondents are female; in terms of year level, majority of the respondents were third year BSEd English; in terms of gadgets used, majority of the respondents use smartphone; in terms of social media platforms used, majority of the respondents used Facebook; in terms of time spent on social media platforms on daily basis, majority of the respondents spend 5-6 hours.
On the extent of the influence of social media platforms on students' speaking skills, with respect to grammar, the overall mean is 4.11 and is verbally interpreted as high influence which implies that interactions on social media platforms improve students’ grammar skills; with respect to vocabulary, the overall mean is 4.48 and is verbally interpreted as very high influence which implies that social media platforms broaden students’ vocabulary; with respect to pronunciation, the overall mean is 4.32 and is verbally interpreted as very high influence which implies that social media platforms enhance students’ pronunciation.
Based on the result of the study, it is concluded that the majority of the respondents are female, 20-21 years old and 3rd year BSEd English. Majority of them use smartphones, most of them use Facebook and spend 5-6 hours on social media platforms on a daily basis. Overall, social media platforms have a very high influence on students’ speaking skills.
It is recommended that teachers should integrate social media platforms in teaching. Teachers are encouraged to utilize social media platforms to enhance their students’ speaking skills. Teachers can create and conduct activities using social media platforms to improve students’ speaking skills. Another recommendation is that future researchers can conduct a study to provide further information about the research topic.
