This study explores zero waste management practices in Tagumpay National High School and Southville 8C National High School during the school year 2023-2024, involving 30 students and 10 teachers as respondents. A mixed-method explanatory research design was employed, using a researcher-made checklist questionnaire and interviews to gather data. The weighted mean was used for data analysis.
Southville 8C National High School has 1,808 students, 70 faculty, and 8 staff, while Tagumpay National High School has 2,363 students, 89 faculty, and 10 staff. Most teachers are seasoned, aged 30-35, with equal gender distribution.
Students are primarily 16 years old, equally male and fernale, all in grade 10.
Both schools extensively practice waste management strategies, including reducing single-use plastics, reusing materials, minimizing energy consumption, repurposing items, and participating in recycling programs. However, they face challenges like limited participation, confusion in waste sorting, and inadequate infrastructure, especially for electronic waste.
The study concludes that effective waste management requires sufficient resources and collaborative efforts to improve infrastructure, raise awareness, and promote sustainability. Recommendations include implementing comprehensive policies, incorporating waste management in curricula, encouraging active student participation, providing LGU support, modeling sustainable behaviors at home. and conducting further research on innovative waste management technologies.
