This study aims to determine if tongue twister has an effect to language fluency among grade 10 students The respondents were comprised of ten boys and ten girls with the total of 20 students from a heterogeneous section.
The researcher used qualitative method using rubrics prepared by the researchers. The rubric was used to know the level of performances of the respondents.
The qualitative design was used to conduct the study which involved drill of reciting tongue twisters of the respondents to determine their language fluency in terms of pronunciation, articulation, and confidence. A rubric was used as instrument in gathering data.
The researchers also used interview guide to get the students problems with regard to the critical sounds in English.
Based on the data gathered, the following findings were obtained.
The following findings were hereby summarized based on thorough analysis of the data gathered and the results obtained in the previous chapter. In the terms of respondents' profile, ten of them are boys and ten of them are girls. Most of them are 15 years of age and had a range of 84-86 as their previous grade in English. During the reading and interview of the respondents, prior to their exposure to tongue twister, most of them mispronounced the critical sound (F) for most of the time, they pronounce it as (P) and 2 of them had mispronounced the critical sound (S) as well as (V) sound. During the recitation of the given sets of tongue twister, most of them had a hard time pronouncing and articulating the (F) and (S) sound and they keep on stammering and stuttering because of the alliterative positioning of the sounds or words but enjoyment upon the drill can be observed.
After the exposure of the respondents to tongue twister, improvement in terms of pronunciation, articulation and confidence can be observed. Respondents that mispronounced the critical sound (F) were able to pronounce it correctly as well as to other critical sounds except the one respondent that mispronounced the (5) sound that has no improvement at all in terms of his pronunciation of the said critical sound because his tongue is a bit short. They were able to improve because of the repetitive drill given by the researchers and their initiative to improve their pronunciation and articulation.
Based on the summary of findings, the following conclusions were drawn:
Tongue twister has an effect to language fluency among grade 10 students. Tongue Twister does affect the performance of Grade 10 students in Language Fluency in terms of pronunciation and Tongue Twister is an effective tool to aid language fluency among grade ten students in terms of pronunciation.
On the basis of the conclusions drawn out of the findings, the following are hereby recommended:
The school teachers may use the tongue twisters as an effective tool to improve student's articulation, confidence and fluency. The teacher can provide activities and exercises using tongue twisters to aid student's difficulty in articulation and pronunciation. For the students, they should realize the importance of having a good pronunciation and articulation as well as self-esteem. They should have an initiative to help themselves improve their fluency by practicing English language, reciting Tongue Twister as their pass time, reading educational books or by watching English movies. For school administration, they can provide seminars and programs that would enhance pronunciation, articulation and confidence, its importance and how it could be exercise and provide activities and exercises using tongue twisters to aid not only students' difficulty in articulation and pronunciation but also for teachers that uses English as the medium of their discussion.
