This research aimed to determine the listening comprehension level of selected grade eight students of Montalban Heights National High School. This research was undertaken to answer the following problems: The profile of the respondents in terms of: sex, and previous grade in English; the listening comprehension level of the respondents as manifested through listening for instructions and listening for directions; and the significant difference in the listening comprehension level of the respondents when they are grouped according to profile.
This research used the descriptive method using the descriptive-evaluative design. The setting of the study was at Montalban Heights National High School with thirty eight (38) grade eight students as the respondents.
The results were tabulated and treated using frequency, percentage distribution and ranking to show the profile of the respondents in terms of sex and previous grade in
The respondents had satisfactory grades in English. The respondents listened to instructions and directions with moderate comprehension. The students listened to instructions similarly with regards to sex, however, they listened to directions differently. The listening comprehension skills of the respondents were the same in terms of their previous grade in English.
Having completed the study, the researcher recommends that the teachers of English should not focus on speaking, reading, and writing alone. Lessons in the following macro skills will be more effective if listening comprehension activities and lessons will be included in each lesson.
The researcher also recommends that the school officials particularly those in the curriculum planning should give emphasis on the listening comprehension level and include methods and strategies to address the improvement of the aforementioned comprehension.
The researcher also recommends that the future researches should improve this study by means of widening the scope of the skills included in this research. With this, future researchers will be able to enhance this research.
Lastly, the researcher also recommends that the students should consider the improvement of their listening comprehension on the course of their studies through constant exposure to certain activities such as listening to music, listening to reports etc. This will be helpful for them to become proficient in their target language.
