Cancer basics -- The Burden of cancer -- Cancer biology.

"ACSM's Essentials of Exercise Oncology is an undergraduate textbook that details the relationship between exercise and cancer prevention, and the value of exercise after a cancer diagnosis. At present, there are 16 million cancer survivors in the United States (US), and that number is expected to grow to 20.3 million by 2026, according to the National Cancer Institute. Further, there are 1.7 million people diagnosed with cancer in the US every year, the majority of whom will live long past their treatment. Additionally, 610,000 Americans die of cancer every year, nearly the same number that die of all forms of cardiovascular disease. In short, cancer is approximately equivalent to cardiovascular disease as a cause of death in the US. Further, the burden of cancer is at least as great as cardiovascular disease, given the number and severity of long-term treatment toxicities. This textbook also will be of interest to individuals preparing for credentialing in exercise oncology through the American College of Sports Medicine as well as other allied health professionals, including physical and occupational therapists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, and physician assistants, and anyone who specializes in working with patients with cancer"--
