Thesis Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering University of Rizal System-Morong 2024
The Philippines is facing a serious energy challenge, marked by a rapid increase in electricity demand and lack of sufficient supply. These situations highlight the need for sustainable and dependable energy sources. Addressing this gap led the researchers looking for an innovative, affordable, and easily accessible renewable energy technologies that are capable of producing sustainable lighting solutions. Generally, the study aimed to design and developed an Archimedes Screw Type Pico Hydropower Turbine System to generate electricity that will serve as a source of energy. The device will be placed at an irrigation canal located at Sitio Daong, Brgy. Plaza Aldea, Tanay Rizal. This research project was conducted during the academic year 2023-2024. In conducting the study, the researchers were guided by the following objectives; first is to design and develop an Archimedes Screw Type Pico Hydropower Turbine System. Second, to test the performance efficiency of the developed Archimedes Screw Type Pico Turbine System concerning to time response on RPM of the turbine and the capacity in terms of volume flow rate and power generation storage. The level of acceptability of the developed device in terms of functional suitability, compatibility, reliability, security, usability and maintainability. The researchers used descriptive and developmental research method in order to attain the specific objectives. The descriptive developmental method is a quantitative research method that aims to gather quantifiable data for statistical analysis of a population sample. This study was evaluated through a research-questionnaire checklist. The developed device was evaluated by thirty (35) respondents including twenty-five (25) residents and ten (10) experts. Based on the findings and the results of the study the device power output can generate 12 V and can generate power supply. The results of the evaluation on the developed device was verbally evaluated as “Highly Acceptable” by the respondents in terms of functional suitability, compatibility, reliability, security, usability and maintainability. Based on the summary of the design results, the researchers concluded that the developed Archimedes Screw Type Pico Hydropower Turbine System can be used to produce electricity up to 12V. It is capable of generating 12.68 volts and a current of 1.02 A with a DC motor speed of 565 rpm and 71 rpm turbine speed at a water level of 0.44 m. The researchers recommend the incorporation of a gearbox mechanism to increase rotational speed and the integration of a step-up module for voltage regulation purposes. Another recommendation is to use alternative lightweight yet corrosion-resistant materials for both the pulley and turbine components. As it is vital to refine the design of the Archimedes screw turbine to enhance its effectiveness in converting water flow into electrical energy.
