This study aimed to determine how listening to music affects psychological mechanisms among college students, including cognitive reappraisal, emotional expressionism, and psychological arousal. Researchers examined how different music characteristics such as entertainment, revival, strong sensation, diversion, discharge, mental work, and solace serve as an instrument to manage emotions using the theory of mood regulation by music theory (Saarikallio and ErkkilƤ, 2007). By understanding these characteristics, the study aims to find the probable advantages and disadvantages of listening to music to psychological mechanisms among college students.
The vital part of this study is exploring whether listening to music has a significant effect on these psychological mechanisms. The null hypothesis states that there is no significant effect between listening to music and psychological mechanisms and will be tested at a 0.05 level of significance. By considering this hypothesis, it will provide evidence that the results of the study will either confirm or disprove the theory that music does not significantly affect the students' psychological mechanisms.
A significant relationship was found between characteristics of music and psychological mechanisms, indicating that it helps students to mange their emotions and improve overall well-being. The overall results from the study revealed that there is a correlation between Psychological mechanisms and Music characteristics.
The result of the study revealed that the students of University of Rizal System - Taytay Campus had a very high extent of the effects of music characteristics, indicating that strong emotions like joy and nostalgia are evoked by music, which also brings back memories and frequently causes physical reactions like singing or dancing. Also, the students had a very high level of psychological mechanisms, suggesting that listening to music can provide comfort during stress, uplift their mood when feeling down, and calm them during moments of distress.
