Dissertation note: Undergraduate Thesis Bachelor of Elementary Education University of Rizal System, Rodriguez, Rizal 2010 Summary: This study primarily aimed to determine the difficulties encountered in oral communication of selected grade VI pupils of Kasiglahan Village Elementary School, Rodriguez, Rizal during the school year 2009-2010. This study employed descriptive method of research. It utilized questionnaire for the profile of the respondents. The researchers used reading materials for them to identify the difficulties in oral communication with regards to long sound and short sound. The observed result were tallied, computed and interpreted using the appropriate statistical treatment. Frequency and Percentage Distribution were used to determine the profile of the respondents in terms of previous English grade, monthly family income and their performance in long sound and short sound. WATER Computed f-value was used to determine the difficulties encountered in oral communication of the respondents and to determine the significant difference between respondents profile and their difficulties in oral communication with regards to long sound and short sound. Findings gathered in this study are as follows: With regards to the profile of the respondents in terms of previous English grade, majority of them got an average grade of 79 while only I got an average of 95. And in terms of monthly family income 120 or 40.40% of them earned 5-10 thousand pesos above 119 or 40.07 earned 5000 below, 35 or 11.78% earned 11-15 thousand pesos and 23 or 7.74% earned 15 thousand pesos above. With regards to the errors commit by the respondents in oral communication test in terms of long sound 6 or 2.02% got a perfect score with an average grade of 25 or 100% while 33 or 11.11% got 13 errors above. And in terms of short sound 12 or 4.04% of the respondents got a perfect score with an average of 3.03% got 13 errors above. With regards to the significant difference between previous English grade and their performance in long sound the computed f-value is 27.59207, while p-value of 0.000 is less than 0.5 level of significance, therefore the null hypothesis was rejected which shows that there is significant difference. In terms of monthly family income, the computed f-value is 9.709269, while p-value of 0.000 is less than the 0.5 level of significance, therefore the null hypothesis was rejected which means that there is a significant difference between monthly family income and their performance in Long sound. With regards to short sound in terms of previous English grade of the respondents the computed f-value is 86.94157, while p-value of 0.021 is less than 0.05 level of significance, therefore the null hypothesis was rejected which means that there is a significant difference between previous English grade and their performance in short sound. In terms of monthly family income, the computed f-value is 11.30776, while p-value of 0.000 is less than 0.05 level of significance, therefore the null hypothesis was rejected which means that there is a significant difference between monthly family income and their performance in short sound. Based on the finding, the researchers concluded that: On the profile of the respondents in terms of previous English grade and their monthly family income greatly affects the oral communication of the Grade VI pupils. regards to long sound and short sound greatly affects the oral communication of the Grade VI pupils. There is a significant difference between the profile of the respondents and their performance in critical vowel sound with regards to long sound and short sound. In light of the above findings, the researchers recommend that the Department of Education (DepEd) should provide a programs or projects that will help the pupils to develop their speaking ability especially in English language. They should also support and give extra concerns on the condition of the schools. School Administrators should give attention to the result of this study. They should encourage their teachers to teach their pupil effectively and support them in their learning. They should pursue in seeking help to the government for sustaining the needs of the school as well as the students for them to improve and also to the education system. English Teachers are encourage to teach their pupils well and become more observant most especially when it comes oral communication and in area of reading. They should encourage their pupils to be aware of the critical vowel sound with regards to long sound and short sound. They are also encouraged to focus to those who students who are not good enough in the class for them to easily cope up what the teacher teach. Parents are encouraged to become more supportive to their children. They are encouraged to give time for their child and teach them with their academics most especially in reading. Pupils are encouraged to be come more conscious about their reading abilities. They should pursue practice reading in order for them to widen the vocabulary and enhance their self confidence when reading. They are encouraged to study well and become more aware of the critical vowel sounds they encountered and they will encounter. Future Researchers should conduct future study to prove or disprove the result.
