520 _aThis study determined the Common practices in laboratory experiments: A basis for development of laboratory guide. This was conducted during the academic year 2014-2015 at Kasiglahan Village National High School. There were ten (10) randomly selected respondents from Grade 7, 8 and 9 students in Kasiglahan Village National High School during school year 2014-2015. The study used qualitative research method where data gathered were based on the observation and interview process to the respondents by the researchers. Based on the data gathered, majority of respondents was female. In terms of year level, there were 3 respondents from grade 7, 3 respondents from grade 8 and 4 respondents from grade 9; in terms of their recent grades in science most of the respondents got 85. Majority of the respondents did not know how to handle laboratory apparatus. Some of them were aware in proper handling of apparatus but they do not apply it because of some reasons such as respondent 10 he says that he can handle apparatus like microscope, but he has a problem in revolving nosepiece because he lack experience in using microscope. In handling test tube, respondent 3 answered he transferred chemicals in mouth to mouth of the test tube which is a malpractice because it can cause spill. Majority of the respondents answered that they know how to use different reagents and aware to the chemicals that is hazardous as long as they are guided by their teachers when they are conducting experiment. There are some problems that occurred, based on the answer of respondent 4 and 6 for them it is hard to understand if the chemical is written in chemical formula. Majority of the respondents answered that they did not know how to dispose the chemicals after they performed the experiments, but others respondents is aware in how to dispose it properly just like respondent 3. Respondent 3 answered that the hazardous chemical is need to dispose in a totally closed container then buried into soil. Other respondents answered a wrong way of disposing of chemical they answered they disposed it in drainage. window, running water. The researchers interviewed the respondents about the malpractices they have done in laboratory experiments, Majority of the answered of the respondents' talks about the improper way of handling of apparatus just like respondent 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9 and 10. Other respondents answered about the use of chemicals respondent 1 and 6 and the remaining respondents talks about the proper disposing of chemicals. The teacher interviewed by the researchers said that it is necessary for their school to have a develop laboratory guide because she has an experienced that because of the wrong use of laboratory apparatus or malpractice it may cause or lead to an accident. Based on the findings of the study, the following conclusions were drawn. Female respondents outnumbered male respondents; three grade 7, three (3) grade 8 and four (4) grade 9 students comprised the respondents; most of them have 85 as recent grade in science. All of the respondents experienced handling apparatuses; Most of them encountered difficulty in handling apparatuses; some are aware of proper practice on handling them. Majority of the respondents observed proper practice when using reagent chemicals especially when guided by their teachers; some experienced difficulty in handling situations when problem occur such as accidentally spilled chemical. Some of the respondents observed proper chemical disposal after every experiment, majority were not aware of the proper pradices on disposing chemicals Majority of the respondents encountered difficulty in proper handling apparatuses, they don't usually follow proper procedures and instructions, most of the respondents encountered difficulty in identifying reagent chemicals and most of them did not know how to handle situations when accidents & problem occurred. Providing & developing laboratory guidelines and proper guidance are very important to address common problems encountered by the respondents. Based on the result of the study, the following recommendations are hereby offered by the researchers. Students can learn more by using developed laboratory guidelines. In these laboratory guidelines, they could be more aware in preventing accidents inside the laboratory. Teachers should monitor always the students when performing experiments and explain clearly what is written in laboratory. Parents should encourage their children in attending school every day. School Administrators should help the students to enrich the skills and awareness in laboratory experiments.
