520 _aThis study aimed to determine the effectiveness of using phrase to improve speed in reading. The researchers used experimental design for this research. Specifically, it made use of the pre-reading and post-reading design This research involved two sections of Grade 4 pupils in Payatas B Annex Elementary School S.Y 2018-2019. The researchers gave the pre-reading to both groups The researchers discussed the considered lessons from the teachers' lesson plan for the next three days. The experimental group was subjected to the chosen phrases, while the control group utilized the conventional way of teaching. On the last day, the researchers gave the post-reading to measure the reading performance of the pupils. The experimental group was exposed to reading of different phrases during class instructions that led to the improvement of their speed in reading. Based on the gathered data, the researchers had the following findings: The mean scores of the control and experimental group in the pre reading and post reading increased from 80.23 to 87.00 and 93.92 to 155. 52 respectively. There was significant difference between the pre-reading and post-reading mean scores of control and experimental group, as the p-value did not exceed 0.05 level of significance. There was significant difference between post- reading means scores of the control and experimental group, since the p-value did not exceed 0.05 level of significance, From the enumerated findings, the following are the conclusions: The use of phrases in reading is effective in improving pupils reading level performance. Using phrases in reading is helpful in improving reading level performance of the pupils Based on the result of this study, it is recommended to teachers to utilize phrases in reading in teaching pupils how to help them improve their speed in reading
