The study aimed to determine the effect of socioeconomic status on the academic performance of selected third-year education students at the University of Rizal System-Rodriguez during the first semester of the school year 2020-2021.
The researchers used the descriptive qualitative research on which they gathered, interpreted, and analysed the statement given by the participants in examining the problem of this study.
The researchers presented three parts of the questionnaires: Part I was the Respondents' Profile, Part 2 was the Family Socioeconomic Profile, and Part 3 was the Effects of Socioeconomic Status on Online Learning. The researchers interviewed the respondents online to get their perspectives on the socioeconomic status of their academic performance. The researchers then gathered, analyzed, and interpreted the data.
Due to the Covid 19 Pandemic, the researchers did not have the opportunity to conduct a formal face-to-face interview with all the participants. The respondents answered the questionnaires through a google form.
From the gathered data, the following are the drawn findings:
1. The majority or 7 participants have a monthly income of P11, 000 to P15, 000, and 2 have a monthly income of above P25, 000. The majority of the participants had a QPA of 2.0 to 2.3, representing their academic achievement, most of them during the pandemic. The highest educational attainment of most of the mothers is high school graduates. Most respondents got a family member of 6 to 10, and the majority or 11 said 2 members are currently studying in their family. The majority or 13 respondents got both a cell phone and laptop/computer, but some said they only borrowed the gadget/s.
2. The majority of the parents' salaries are insufficient to cover all of their expenses, resulting in non-payment of their internet bill monthly. 11 out of 20 participants claimed their monthly income impacts their studies. Some parents' salaries are insufficient to cover all of their expenses, resulting in non-payment of their internet bill every month,
3. The majority or 11 out of 20 participants believed that the number of family members currently studying affected their studies. Some of the eldest children have to check the progress or module of their younger siblings before
theirs. They also have to wait for their sisters or brothers to finish the module using the laptop before them.
4. As to the financial aspect, 7 out of 20 participants stated that they still experienced financial problems when they could not afford to load or pay for internet monthly due. Due to the pandemic, their parents have no job, affecting their status. On the other hand, 13 out of 20 participants stated that this factor did not affect their studies since they have a reasonable budget, and their parents now have their job to at least sustain their needs enough.
Based on the gathered data, the following conclusions are given:
1. Most of the time, the wages of their parents could not sustain all the household expenses, including their internet bills.
2. The availability of gadgets and accessibility on the internet also affected students' online learning, especially those who have siblings who are also studying.
3. Scholarships and educational assistance is given to some of the students were a big help for them, on which they used to buy their own digital devices like cell phones and laptops for online learning.
4. The socioeconomic status has a significant effect on the online learning experience of 3rd-year students.
In the light of the conclusions made based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are given:
Park
LGUS and NGOs. They can focus the scholarships and educational assistance for those students who need it, especially those who suffer the effect of limited income in their online learning and will use the help for a good purpose.
University of Rizal System Administration. Understanding and consideration must prolong for the teachers and students to have a fruitful education still. May they consider the students' socioeconomic status to surpass all the challenges and continue their education.
Families of Students. Always continue the support and help you can give the students to be an inspiration and encouragement to continue their learning.
Students. They can approach their teachers, instructors, or professors whenever they have problems regarding their gadgets and internet connection to give amendments and alternative ways to still comply with their activities in the class.
Future Researchers. They can conduct studies related to this research in the future so people can see further how socioeconomic status affects the students.
