This study provided insights into the roles and practices of learners in promoting environmental awareness within selected public high schools in Montalban, Rizal, a clear understanding of learners' contributions and involvement in environmental initiatives. Given the increasing global environmental challenges, the involvement of younger generations in environmental conservation is essential. Since learners make up a large portion of the younger generation, it's important to educate leamers about the environment, and know the learner's roles in promoting environmental awareness. The study examines leamers' environmental practices, and advocacy efforts in raising environmental awareness.
The study combined quantitative and qualitative research methods to gather and analyze data. A questionnaire and interviews were used to collect information, and the weighted mean was used to analyze the data. The surveys were distributed to YES-O members, across Grades 7 to 10.
The summary of findings revealed that the profile of the respondents reveals that the 37 learners, are aged 13-14, while 22 learners fall within the 15-16 age range. In terms of sex, the majority are female. The grade level 8, comprising 25 learners, followed by Grade 9 and Grade 10, each with 15 learners. Grade 7 learners, with only 5 learners. The findings reveal that the role of the leamers in promoting environmental awareness in terms of practices and advocacy, leamers demonstrate strong environmental practices, particularly in solid waste management and energy conservation, with high engagement in solid waste reduction, recycling, and energy-saving efforts, while also engaging in advocacy through social media, environmental organizations, and community-based initiatives. By equipping learners with knowledge and skills in environmental thinking, learners can become responsible stewards of the environment and educate others on environmental issues.
The study concludes that the role of learners in promoting environmental awareness includes developing a strong foundation in environmental stewardship. Learners demonstrate a commitment to sustainability by practicing environmental responsibility in both school and the community. The study also revealed that sex. but not age or grade level, significantly influenced learners' involvement in environmental initiatives, sex significantly influences learners' environmental engagement, with females showing higher levels of participation. Females were more likely to engage in and promote environmental initiatives than males. However, learners' participation in environmental advocacy varied. Learners employed various strategies to promote environmental awareness, but faced challenges such as lack of participation and resources. While leamers demonstrate a strong foundation in environmental stewardship, the study emphasizes the need for sustained efforts to nurture learners' role as future environmental leaders. The study recommended strategies such as using social media for promoting environmental awareness, engaging with environmental organizations, and integrating environmental topics into educational programs.
And lastly, the researchers formulated the recommendation for teachers, students, community and school administrators. Wherein, the students should be more aware and encourage to take part on the utilization and implementation of the environmental education. While, the Teachers should have the characteristics to lead the students in the environmental practices and well educated when it comes to environmental awareness practices and advocacy, the school administrators or community should provide sufficient equipment and to promote and practice environmental protection. Continue strengthen the utilization and implementation of that has been provided by the DepEd.
